Sustainability Development Goals - How Can Chemical Engineers Contribute?

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Chemical engineers play a vital role in achieving these goals through process design, sustainable manufacturing, environmental protection, energy systems, biotechnology, and innovation. Among these 17 goals, the SDGs 6, 7, 9, 12 and 13 are the goals where chemical engineers can contribute the most.

SDGs - Contribution of Chemical Engineers
Sr. No SDG Goal Contribution of chemical engineers
No poverty End poverty in all forms. Develop cost-effective industrial processes that create employment, reduce production costs, and support rural industries through bio-based technologies and small-scale chemical enterprises.
Zero Hunger End hunger and improve food security. Design efficient fertilizer production, develop sustainable pesticides, improve food preservation, create biodegradable food packaging, and convert agricultural waste into valuable products.
Good Health and Well-Being Ensure healthy lives for all. Manufacture pharmaceuticals, vaccines, medical gases, biomaterials, and diagnostic chemicals. Improve sanitation through water purification and waste treatment technologies.
Quality Education Ensure inclusive and equitable education. Promote STEM education, conduct research, mentor students, and develop affordable laboratory equipment and educational technologies.
Gender Equality Achieve gender equality and empower women. Foster inclusive workplaces, ensure equal opportunities in engineering, mentor women in STEM, and design technologies that reduce labor burdens in households and communities.
Clean Water and Sanitation Ensure access to safe water and sanitation. Design water treatment plants, desalination systems, wastewater recycling, membrane filtration, and technologies for removing heavy metals and emerging contaminants.
Affordable and Clean Energy Ensure access to sustainable energy. Develop biofuels, hydrogen production, fuel cells, batteries, carbon capture technologies, and improve energy efficiency in industrial processes.
Decent Work and Economic Growth Promote sustainable economic growth and productive employment. Design safer industrial processes, improve productivity, create green jobs, optimize manufacturing, and support entrepreneurship in chemical industries.
Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure Build resilient infrastructure and foster innovation. Develop advanced materials, smart manufacturing, process automation, nanotechnology, and sustainable industrial infrastructure.
Reduced Inequalities Reduce inequalities within and among countries. Develop low-cost technologies for healthcare, water, sanitation, and clean energy that are accessible to underserved populations.
Sustainable Cities and Communities Make cities safe, resilient, and sustainable. Improve air quality through emission control, develop sustainable construction materials, enhance waste management, and support circular economy practices.
Responsible Consumption and Production Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. Apply green chemistry, waste minimization, process intensification, recycling technologies, life-cycle assessment, and resource efficiency.
Climate Action Combat climate change and its impacts. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions, develop carbon capture and utilization (CCU), improve energy efficiency, produce renewable fuels, and model climate-friendly industrial systems.
Life Below Water Conserve oceans and marine resources. Reduce industrial effluents, develop biodegradable plastics, remove microplastics, prevent marine pollution, and treat wastewater before discharge.
Life on Land Protect terrestrial ecosystems and biodiversity. Develop environmentally friendly agrochemicals, remediate contaminated soils, reduce hazardous waste, and promote sustainable biomass utilization.
Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions Promote peaceful and inclusive societies. Ensure ethical engineering practices, maintain industrial safety, comply with environmental regulations, and contribute to transparent, responsible industrial governance.
Partnerships for the Goals Strengthen global partnerships. Collaborate with governments, academia, industry, and international organizations to transfer technology, conduct joint research, and implement sustainable engineering solutions.
